I had been running as part of my fitness routine for mostly 30-50 minutes on a regular basis, but never participated in an official 10K and I wanted to be able to run for more than an hour without breaks. I felt that my condition was in good shape, because of the cardio workouts I did, but I guess I hit a plateau and needed a real goal instead of just using the treadmill and do an occasional run outside. The only race I had done before was a 5K back in Holland, my home country. I had joined a ski-club over there, which offered group running sessions and we trained once a week in the dunes, near the ocean, a gorgeous environment with hills, woods, water and different types of surface. When I joined that club back in 2003, I fell more in love with running, enjoyed the training runs and I made sure to run a couple times a week. In 2004 I moved to New York and I kept running once or twice a week, but I focused more on gym time with different cardio workouts.
Last year I realized that I was looking for a clear goal in training besides all obvious health reasons. I was eager to take my running to a higher level, since it’s the sport that satisfies me most. I got a renewed passion for running and started training for the 10K by joining Nike group runs and adding miles. Since the Human Race challenged people to make a pledge, I was motivated to do so, by letting friends and family know about my official first 10K and I asked them to support the charity I selected. I raised almost $500 and ran the 10K in 56 minutes.

What race are you training for?

Right after the Human Race, I was so enthusiastic and motivated to keep up with the more intense training and new goals to accomplish, so I was looking into half marathons in the fall. However, I got a nasty shin splint and it took a long time to go away. It seems that it was a combination of shoes that I bought too small and all the added mileage and intensity in a short time span. I couldn’t run for almost 2 months and relapsed to fitness and spinning. During winter I was ready to get back in the running groove and build up running again to get ready for the next challenge: The New York Half Marathon on 8/16. I was very excited when I was able to register. I am following a 3 month training program that I downloaded from Runner’s World and so far it’s going well. I do feel though, that my shins are my weaker spot so after the race I will have that checked out hoping that I find some solutions to prevent injuries better. I already made sure to get expert advise for my new running shoes in a specialty store and I also understand that sometimes you just need to listen to your body and skip a run when needed.

What do you think is missing most from running apparel?
Ever since I heard from The Fashionable Runner, I am more aware of this question, when I buy new running gear or during a run. I miss running specific thongs and panties, that don’t move, lack labels and nasty seams. I don’t think there are many choices out there and I recently got a scar from a bad case of chafing during a long run. It turned out to be a sharp seam from my underwear. Now, I am so much more aware of labels, seams and the feel of the fabric. I love the stuff Lululemon makes, I got their swifty tech tee, it’s perfect and doesn’t smell bad after a long run. I think they have a smart sense of creating a product that feels, fits and looks good with some original features.
Nike makes good running shorts, it fits and feels good, doesn’t move up and they offer nice color combinations. Everybody has them though!
I also miss tops and tees with built-in support. I know they’re out there, but the choice is limited and very often the support is not enough for intense training. More fashionable running socks, would be nice. If there were fashionable compression socks out there, I would have gotten them already. I am also not able to find a cool, fashionable running jacket for rain/wind or for super cold weather. What’s out there, looks the same to me, except for different color options, but I’d like some more original designs. Something that stands out more. Oh and running tights, I wish their were more flattering ones, that still give you the warmth, but don’t look like tights ate the lower leg level. How about an outer layer (as in ski-pants) or leg warmers attached that are changeable!

Most of the time, when I speak with other runners, or people who regularly participate in races, I always feel that everybody is so open and social. It’s easy to connect with other runners and they are all passionate about it and willing to share their experience and give advise. After the half marathon I want to join a running club since I think that will give additional motivation and will push me extra to do more races and hopefully complete a full marathon next year!

Item of the Week - Running Skirts from RunningSkirts.com

<img style="float:left; Running several 5k's with my Dad while I was in college.
2. Running The Apple Harvest Ramble a 10-mile race near Boston while I was in grad school. The race had a really fast crowd and I was very under trained. I eventually came in last at that race. I attribute that race to making me want to prove myself as a runner. It gave me the drive to train hard for longer distance races.
3. Completing my first marathon in San Diego in 2008. Seeing my husband at the finish line with a sign he made in the two hours he had to wait from his finish time to the time I crossed the line. I was overwhelmed with all sorts of emotions.

What race are you training for?
I'm currently training for two races, the San Francisco Half Marathon and the Blue Lake Sprint Triathlon in Fairview, Oregon.

What do you think is missing most from running apparel?
I'm tall (5'11'') so I can never find running pants that are long enough, everything is a capri! Manufacturers are getting better at making tops longer but it can still be a challenge finding long tops.

Advice from Alisa:
Once you find a good sports bra, buy a bunch because you never know when it will be discontinued.
Running buddies are awesome, they push you and encourage you and help make long runs seem short.

Race of the week: Wakely Peace Ultra

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 164px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SlzJaD0LmTI/AAAAAAAAAHA/baxMtZkdUYc/s200/Damm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358379106201999666" />
The Damn Wakely Dam Ultra (aka "Wakely Peace Ultra") is a groovy trail run through the peaceful Adirondack Park Wilderness of New York State along a remote and uninterrupted section of the Northville Placid Trial between Piseco Lake and Wakely Dam. Currently training for the
NYRR NYC 1/2 Marathon which will be my 3rd time running the race. My goal is to tweet during the race, but I tried this running 6 miles with my iphone in hand and
added 3 min to my normal finish time. :( Local events help me train
like the LIRRC Wednesday Night Summer Series as well
as keeping up with my 2 year old Jack Russell.
Favorite Running Moment: Running my first marathon, the 2001 NYC
Marathon with my "husband to be" Michael, a 50K guy who has also
completed so many marathons he lost count. Michael trained and ran
with me the whole time, taking photos along the way. Most memorable
point was the finish, not only because of the accomplishment, but
Michael proposed to me at the finish line. :) Not only that, it was
incredibly emotional for me as a New Yorker as the race immediately
followed 9/11. The crowd cheering us on, is something I will never
forget.
Favorite mantra: Don't just watch things happen, make things happen
Please feel free to follow Constance on Twiiter: http://twitter.com/constancek

Photo Credit: Michael Korol of Real Sport Images.

Item of the Week - Gracie's Gear A-Line Tank

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 174px; height: 250px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SjBjvx7FLOI/AAAAAAAAAGI/HFB4z9qaynY/s320/Gracies.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345882430194920674" />
Happy Wednesday

Gracie's Gear A-Line Tank

We've received input from our survey of this new running line sold at Marathon Expo's and some running shops.
This line focuses on providing extra pocket room. This week's item of the week is for the well-endowed chicas that are looking for support while running. It is the
Lilyette "Active Motion" Underwire Sports Bra 30C-40DDD for mid level excercise
$38.00.
This item is similar to the CWRX but retails for about 40% less. It comes in black or white ( though it would be nicer if there was more of a color selection)
some features:
-Encased underwire features hidden wire channel for added support and midlevel wire channel to prevent wire poking at sides.
-Inner mesh lining and center gore-so it breathes!
-Side mesh features tension release and fold-over binding provides comfort.
-Wide elastic bottom, adds support-and it wicks moisture away!
-Triple back hook-and eye-closure-more support

One of the downsides of this item is that the care label says hand wash. Now this item is just polyester and spandex, no exotic contents there. So i'm thinking it could be thrown in the cold wash and left sitting out to dry. I tend to do that with alot of my athletic clothes (tech shirts/tights)anyways because the dryer is so hard on them and they dry relatively quick.

So, some questions for readers...

Has anyone tried this item or something similar?
Would the special care deter you from buying it if you thought it provided with the support you need at a fair cost?

Event of the Week: Brooklyn 1/2 Marathon

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/ShtMiRDOICI/AAAAAAAAAF4/5JNq2E4BZ14/s320/brooklyn-half-marathon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339945934754029602" />
Hellllo ladies and gents (who may be reading) We hope you all had a fabulous memorial day weekend and weather where ever you may be. This week's event is my favorite borough half out of the 5 borough challenge NYRR puts on every year. I have run it the past 3 years in a row and believe it is one of the fastest, flatest half marathon courses i've run. Though a little birdie told me, they are changing the route this year to start in Prospect Park (with 2 loops) and end on the Coney Island Boardwalk (2 mile run on the boardwalk will not be included in the 13.1 miles this year :( I will not be running it this year (have another engagement next weekend) But if anyone here runs it, please let me know how it is. This short I tried on last week at Lady Foot Locker and really liked it. You can also find it at Under Amour.com and other major sporting goods stores that carry the line. The 2 stands for the 2" inseam on the short. If you look on the Under Amour site you can see shorts by various inseam lengths. 4" is the standard, so 2" is a shorter short. This short is a poly-elastane blend. It's lightweight and stretches to allow you movement. This is critical to me, because no one likes running shorts that look cute on the hanger, but later bunch up in all the wrong places when you run. It has a 100 percent polyester liner brief and a back pocket at the CB waist to stash keys/metrocard. Though it would give me piece of mind if the pocket had a closure on it. Retail price is $34.99

So... have any of you ladies tried this short or any of the under armour gear (tops, shorts, shoes, lately) I see they are really expanding their women's wear line this year.

Event of the week: VCTC Summer Cross Country Series

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/ShDLAULzP-I/AAAAAAAAAFg/Xai8OnqUfPA/s200/xc_04_start.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336988764712681442" />

Hello ladies,

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Most recently I completed the Colorado Half Marathon. It had been a tough spring for me as both of my grandma’s recently passed away within 8 weeks of each other. The entire race I thought of my two grannies. I felt that their spirits were giving me strength to push through. About mile 5, I put on my headphones and started to pick up the pace, and was listening to Pat Benatar, “We Belong” …the sky and the mountains were just lovely that early in the morning. As I ran downhill towards the expanse of farmland, I was overcome with such love, positive energy and an intense awareness of the beauty and fragility of life that I started to cry as I was running! I channeled all of those feelings into the race and finished with my second best half marathon time.

What race are you training for (if you're not training for a race then maybe why you run?

I’m targeting the Denver Marathon in October. It will be my second full marathon. (My first was Chicago last fall.) So I run as a part of my training plan – but mostly I run because I love the structure it gives to my day. I know that the first thing I will do in the morning is get up and go. My morning run is my time to think and plan the rest of my day. Afterwards, my little runner’s high gives me energy to work hard throughout the rest of the day. Plus some of my closest and healthiest friends are runners. Every Saturday I look forward to running with my training group. Runner’s Edge of the Rockies. I run just as much for fitness as I do for friendship.

What do you think is missing most from running apparel?

Well, why do trail running shoes have the best color combinations? I saw these really great hot pink and grey running shoes the other day, but they were trails shoes, and I needed a neutral road shoe, so I couldn’t get them. So I think there needs to be road shoes with a color palette beyond whites and pastels. Also – we gals need skorts with pockets!

Item of the Week: Hydration Pack

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 233px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/Sgo7eyQlNyI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/VLVs9C4e5Yk/s400/NALSprint-2T.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335142108647208738" />

Hello!!

Since we're getting into warmer weather soon, we thought we'd pick a running accessory just for fun this week. I was in target and bought this item last weekend. I had been looking for a hydration pack for long runs but, at an affordable price (some packs can be in the 100s depending the brand and features). This one seemed perfect. It's by Nalgene and retails for about 40 dollars. You can click the link for an online store (unfortunately it's not sold at Target online, go figure)

Here are some of key features:

Fuel window for bladder level
Extra wide bladder port allows ease of insertion
Insulated bladder compartment
Ergonomic back panel with perforated foam for improved ventilation
Contoured mesh shoulder straps for comfort and breathability
Adjustable sternum strap
Light clip strap
Cargo compartment 184 cubic inches

The benefits that got me were:
1) the adjustable sternum strap ( i feel very secure wearing it that it won't move around)
2)the bladder is actually very easy to remove which is great for cleaning and/if you'd like to have more storage space in the pack.

What do you ladies think? How many of you use hydration packs/belts/etc?

I've been doing long runs for a few years now, and i'm just starting to realize the benefits of running hands free (sans water bottle :0)

Event of the Week: The Melissa Fund Run

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 126px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SgeaIu8bN9I/AAAAAAAAAFI/8Snuc1ghxQU/s200/crowd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334401758474745810" />
Hi Ladies,

We hope everyone had a nice weekend and a terrific Mother's Day (to all you moms, grandmas,moms-to-be) Our event for this week is one a runner friend passed on to us. I love mud, dirt, and trails; pavement is a mere necessity of a life in the urban jungle. It could also be any number of times that I've been out running the hilly trails back home, at Rockefeller State Park with a few friends, or chasing my own shadow at any number of trail races outside the city. Running is my zen-zone / think-tank time, so sometimes I'm chattering away ideas at my friends and fellow runners and sometimes I just NEED to get out there and run hard and fast and make decisions, formulate plans, or just philosophize all on my own.

Q:What races are you training for?

A:Well... I'm your a-typical self-professed hardcore athlete... I don't make training plans (I know it's kinda crazy, but having been coached nearly to death in the past, I have found it SO much more fun this time around to just train / race on any given day how I feel and to do my absolute best to make it all FUN and very social, rather than setting goals and letting myself or anyone else down). This year though, I have had to actually sit down & fill in a calendar of my biggest & baddest events, so I can not just survive each of them, but also have a rockin' time doing each. I'll be doing the NorthFace Endurance Challenge up at Bear Mountain (though I pansied out with the 1/2 Marathon for that one), SBR Sprint Triathlon out to Bear Mountain, Ultimate XC Val Morin 50K up in Canada, Rhode Island Half-Ironman, Ironman Wisconsin, any number of NYRR races throughout the year, am organizing my own series of training marathons & triathlons, and am awaiting confirmation as an Achilles volunteer for the NYC Marathon this year (I have no interest in doing the same big-ticket Marathons more than once for myself, when I can help others & move on to new terrain for myself).

Q:What do you think is missing in running apparel?

A:I'll slim it down to the 1st 3 that come to mind... 1st: Why do all athletic companies think that all girls love pink and fru-fru flowers?! I abhor pink. Give us more options in periwinkle, green, maroon, bright blues, etc. 2nd: Thicker waist-bands on spandex shorts & pant (I love spandex as a means of avoiding chafing, but really do not like all the thin elastic-banded ones out there that squeeze you in all the wrong places, ride up, & roll over as you run / ride, no matter how skinny or muscular you may be). 3rd: Why hasn't someone come out with a cross between a triathlon top and a running jersey? I love the bigger pockets on my tri tops for my GU, phone, keys, etc., but want it to have more wicking material that doesn't wear out as easily as the material found on my tri tops.

Quote/motto to live by:
On LIFE, I keep coming back to 2:
ONE: "20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bow-lines; sail away from the safe harbor; catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. [Be kind. Help. Love. Laugh.]" ~Mark Twain
TWO: "Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

On ATHLETICISM: "Methinks that the moment my legs begin to move my thoughts begin to flow." ~Henry David Thoreau

Item of the week: Splits 59 Billy Run Short

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SgL8MawYBQI/AAAAAAAAAE4/YDV1B12nKSg/s400/Bill1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333102199030940930" />

Who's heard of this new company Splits 59?

These Billy Run Shorts are made with no-chafe wicking fabric and cooling mesh. The first was about 2 1/2 years after I started running. It was the day I finished a 7-mile run feeling that "runner's high". I realized at that moment that I had become a real runner. Let me tell you, it is a long journey getting there. It took me over 2 years and a couple of half marathons before I got there. I really understand why so many people quit running--it just takes a long time before it becomes natural. If you stick with it, though, you'll get there. I sure did. My second memorable moment was when I completed my first marathon in June 2005. It wasn't particularly emotional for me, but it did hit me soon after I finished that all of my hard work, and great coaching I received, paid off. My coach told me I could run a marathon, meet my goal time, and not feel miserable when I finished if I trained properly. He was right.

Training/Motivation to Run:
I just finished the Tucson Marathon in December 2008 and the Zooma half in April 2009, so I'm not yet back into training for a specific race yet. I am thinking about running a marathon overseas in 2010. Until then, I will do some cross training and a couple of sprint triathlons this summer. I do usually run with a goal in mind. It keeps me motivated. A good example is when I was pregnant with my second child. When I was 7 months pregnant and not running, my husband signed me up for a half marathon 6-months post baby and a marathon 11-months post baby. Having those goals "scared" me into running 3 miles 11 weeks after my son was born and back into training for the half marathon and marathon.

Running Apprel:
I'd like to see more running skirts/skorts with a little more length than most on the market today. I especially like ones with built-in compression shorts that are about as long as a triathlon short. The Triks running skirt has a version that is made this way, but most other brands only have very short shorts underneath, which are not as comfortable and don't cover as well

Item of the Week: Spyder Tank

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SfiKtiU-fKI/AAAAAAAAAEg/orV3JDE4CTo/s400/9AF5A7AF1372F95DA915DE4191A434A3L.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330162673906515106" />
Hello Ladies,

Happy Wednesday! This week's item is a relative new comer to the women's sportswear arena. Designer Calvin Klein has created a line called CK Performance for women which features products suited for running,cycling,walking, and yoga. This line is currently available at Macy's department stores and online at essentialapparel.com. Click title for product link.

The spyder tank I found to be a good fit. It has a built-in sports bra and the body length was decent. This top comes in solid colors- light blue, charcoal, and black, as well as a funky geometric print(at Macy's stores) It retails for about 40 dollars. The criss cross strap design I thought was classy and elegant. The straps seemed to stay in place when worn, and there is little to no adjusting when putting the top on. I'm never a fan of items that look cute on the hanger, but, are a nightmare trying on. Now we would like to hear what you readers think.

Do think this would this be a good top for running? It helped that it was along a parade route before a parade and there were hundreds of children with their hands out for "high fives".
The other is doing the Nike Women's marathon 3 years ago and coming across the finish line to pick up my Tiffany necklace from a fireman dressed in a tuxedo. I hear it's a great one, but what's really getting me going right now is a friend of mine that has challenged me on Nikerunning.com. He just started running and thinks he can kick my but. We are seeing who can get to 200 miles first. I will(-;

What do you think is missing from running apparel?
Fashion, definitely. They end at about my knees (i'm 5'3")

So our question is, do any of you fashionable runners shop at Old Navy or a store similar (which one) for running/excercise clothes?

What do you like/dislike about their current athletic wear products?

please click title item of the week for link to product webpage.

A great volunteer opportunity for women coming up

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 158px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SeydPmDP7eI/AAAAAAAAADo/pAC59tb0l_0/s320/32J.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326805350510226914" />

Happy Tuesday,

We just wanted to pass along this excellent run/walk/volunteer opportunity to our readers. Shaped like a 5-point star, the web radiates from the center of the breast and reduces the initial upward bounce experienced during high-impact activities. Rather than compressing and immobilizing the breasts, the Targeted Support Web creates a floating inner suspension system that is comfortable, yet supportive."

This bra can be found at zappos.com for $74

Who has purchased the CW-X? Great job to all the runners who made it out for the Scotland 10K despite the downpour of rain. This week's event was sent to me by our runner friend, Elena. It is a small race in river side park, which is great for those of us that like running with less than 2000 people and this race is for a good cause. So without further ado...

Organizers: Lend-a-hand India
What: 2nd annual 5K run/walk
Where: Riverside Park, New York City (enter at 116th street and Riverside Drive)
When: Sun, April 19, 2009. Registration at 9:30am. Race begins 10:00am.
Registration fee: $10 until April 14 and $15 thereafter

You can register for 10 dollars right now online through pay pal. Jill will be out there running and would like to meet any of you bloggers who may be running. Just look for her in the black visor and red TRD shirt.

This group also has a team that does marathon fundraising and you can read more info about it on the site by clicking the Event of the week for the link.

Mission Statement

Lend-A-Hand India's mission is to make a difference in the lives of the poor through self help.

By partnering with grassroots non-profit organizations, community groups, and local governments, we create better access to education, vocational training, career development, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. Come summer and fall, it's all about training to chase down a BQ at the Marine Corps Marathon.

Q:What do you think is missing in running apparel?

A: Honestly, right now I am not sure anything is missing. I love what running skirts/dresses have done for women's running fashion, as they open up so many options that weren't in running fashion 5 or so years ago. That said, only issue I ever have with running apparel is inconsistent sizing-not only from brand to brand, but even within a certain brand. And I do sometimes wish that more manufacturers would make running shorts/pants in shorter lengths-I think Nike does but not sure about any others.

Item of the Week: Fizz Tank

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SdycH7GZC5I/AAAAAAAAAC4/hFNAUiqixpA/s200/FTJD.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322300519582600082" />

Hello Everyone! Our runner friend, Lara, gave us an idea for this week's item.
It is the Sugoi Fizz tank with built-in bra. She states this is an really awesome top to run in because the mesh panel back keeps her cool in the summer. It comes in 4 different colors and she says she owns 3 tops in this style. The top retails for around $49-55 dollars regular price. We found in on Back Country Outlet on sale for $29.97, so you all better snatch one up! You can click on the item of the week title for a link to Back Country Outlet web page.

So we are curious,

Do any of you own this top or one similar?

This particular top has a mesh pocket on the back (good for keys, gels for long runs, etc)IF you bought this top, do you think you would use the back pocket feature? Why or why not?

Event of the Week: Scotland Run

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 292px; height: 291px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zP1xzegUvyQ/SdohW_vWM0I/AAAAAAAAACw/mJ9i4aWsx_c/s400/LNM%2520girls%2520in%2520kilts%2520292x291.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321602588642521922" />
Hello Ladies,

Hope you all had a great weekend and happy Monday! In 2006 I decided to get back into running. I had run XC in HS but gave it up senior year. I actually hated the idea of running for awhile, and by awhile I mean 5 years! Senior year of college I realized I needed to get back into shape and decided to start pounding pavement again. I finally gained enough courage to do an NYRR race. It was pouring the day of the race, and I considered just backing out. Instead of I sucked it up and went to the race...and finished! As soon as I crossed the finished line I was hooked (again.) My other two moments involve half marathons. Last summer I ran the Nike NYC Half. Running the streets of NY with so many other runners was incredible. My sister came in from Boston to surprise me at the finish line, seeing her near the finish line with my parents helped me finish with a smile on my face. And finally my last moment doesn't really involve me so much as my friends. A few months ago we all ran the Bronx Half Marathon, it was my 4th half but their first. Getting to see and help my friends cross the finish line of their first half marathon was amazing and inspiring!

Q:What race are you training for?
A:I'm currently training for my first marathon, the Country Music Marathon in Nashville. I'm training with Team in Training. In exchange for the training, I am raising $3800 for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I'm excited to cross the finish line and know that not only did I do something amazing for myself but also for others.

Q:What do you think is missing from running apparel?
A:"Girly" running clothing in general. I love running skirts and very feminine tops (although a lot of these have built in support which I hate!) Running doesn't make me any less feminine, but the clothing does at times. I want to look like cute while I'm running or getting brunch with the girls after a long run

To help Emily raise money for Team in Training,click the Runner of the Week title and it will direct you to her fundraising link. Here's this week's item of the week: BlueFish Juice Pant

This week's item is one that we came across at an Equinox shop. BlueFish is a Brazilian company that is very popular in Miami. This pant can be found on their website and is selling for $79.95. You can click on the title for link to BlueFish product info.
What we thought:

1) Heavier material (higher percent of lycra) holds you in and makes your butt look fabulous!

2) Material might be too heavy and not provide enough ventilation during runs

2) Design was fun and added flare to the pant

Now we'd love to know what you ladies think! Please share your thoughts with us.

Would you run in this or do you think it's too chic?
Is the design down the side too much for a casual run in the park?

Event of the Week Urban Environmental Challenge

Hi Ladies,

Please check out this week's event. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put a steep(ish) hill the last quarter mile of a marathon is a cruel person. I thought I had trained well and wouldn’t need to worry about hitting the infamous “wall”... I really don’t remember much past mile 22, but I do recall the frustration as at least 25 people passed me on that hill to Iwo Jima. I had worn my name on my shirt and heard many distinct voices urging me onward as I tried valiantly to will one leg in front of the other, but I’ve never felt that kind of complete immobilizing physical and mental anguish before (and I had swum long distance competitively for 12 years!) After all the pain and not reaching my goal, I thought I would never run a marathon again. But these things are transient. I was so happy I got to share the experience with my Mom who had flown out to watch her oldest daughter race just as her father had done so many times, the same man who had proudly served his country in the Navy. That weekend was huge in terms of mother-daughter bonding. And overall, it taught me to truly appreciate the process of training as opposed to the end result, because seriously: who really prefers the way they feel the last 3 miles of a marathon when compared to the friendships formed and solidified during 10 or 20 mile runs?

Q:What race are you training for?

A:
I’m running the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC on April 5th which I’m excited about just because I have so many friends running and I’ve heard the city is gorgeous. But my next big race is the inaugural Stillwater Marathon along the St. Croix river in Stillwater, Minnesota on May 24th. I’m running for my Dad, who can watch me run for the first time as he battles with his own health issues and looks to a brighter future.

Q:What do you think is missing in running apparel?

A:Without a doubt, a better place to store keys, metrocards, money, etc. Everyone knows my sweaty money story (straight out of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and living in NYC means there are too many things to carry that don’t fit in the tiny pockets they stick in running shorts and tights, or are so heavy they pull the tights down! A pocket on the side or back of a sports bra would actualize what I and many others already do on a daily basis and be far more stylish.

Item of the Week-Circuit Tank

Hi Ladies, Once again it is time for the "item of the week" My fellow blogger and I tried on this amazing running top at the Lululemon at Union Square (also available online) It comes in this salmon color (pictured here), white and yellow and retails at about 49 dollars. Available in sizes 4-12

What we thought:

1) Nice cut for the bust, makes you chest (big or small) look amazing

2) No built in sportsbra

3) Super lightweight

4) This is top has small silver threads woven into it to make it anti-microbial (no stinky smells) and anti static

5)Flattering lines at the bust, and check website for slimming back view photo as well.

Now... we'd like to see what you readers think.

1) Would you buy this top at this price if you were pleased with the fit? yes or no

2) Out of all the benefits we listed and website listed, which benefit was your favorite:

a-styling

b-technical details

c-comfort

d-other (please list!)

3) Any additional comments?

(Click on the "item of the week" title for the direct link to the Lululemon page with this product)

Event of the Week

It's that time of the year again. Time for the annual spring Mudder's and Grunters trail race (the muddiest 5 mile cross country race in New York state) This is one of my personal favorite races. Who says "fashionable runners" can't get muddy? After running this one three years in a row, I'm throwing in the towel this year because of another race schedule conflict in New Jersey.

Best of luck to all my teammates and friends out there, may there be an abundance of mud for you to run in.

What:Mudder's and Grunters 5 mile race

When: Sunday, March 29th 10AM

Where: FDR State Park

How much: 15 dollars Taconic club members, 17 dollars for non members

Tip: Duct tape your shoes on to avoid them getting sucked off your feet in mud/water crossings.

For more race info, please click on the title "event of the week "

Runner of the Week: Katie Heineken

Q:What is your most memoriable running moment?

A: My most memorable experience to me was running over the Queensboro Bridge in the New York City Marathon and hearing the thunderous roar of the crowd on First Avenue. Fellow runners and teammates alike have told me about the spectators on First Avenue however hearing about it and experiencing it are two completely different things. My once tired legs sprung into action and my feet had a extra kick in their step. As I exited the bridge, turned the corner and ran onto First Ave I felt like a local celebrity waving to all her fans. This was the experience of a lifetime, this was worth every single early morning run, this truly was a "runners high."

Q:What race are you training for?

A:At the moment I am training for the Los Angeles Marathon on May 25, 2009. However, the real goal occurs next September in Berlin when I hope to put forth my fastest time yet. As my favorite motto reads, impossible is nothing.

Q:What do you think is missing in running apparel?

A:As an avid runner I feel the industry lacks funky, feminine running apparel. I would love a running top that can function from Central Park to Central Bar. In training my weekends revolve around running and I would love a cute top that could easily transition from an evening (long) run to dinner/drinks. After all, aren't runners always on the run?

Katie's Quote to live by:

Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. To find out more, click on the title "item of the week" for the link to her site. My fellow blogger and I tried it on last weekend at Equinox (72nd and 2nd ave) and this is how we felt:

Pros:
1) We both agreed that the diagonal lines done on the side and seaming created a "slimmer figure" Always a plus in our book!
2)The length was fairly reasonable (not too short and not too long) and could work for shorter and a longer torso.
3) Built in bra, good for small bust sizes.
Cons:
1) The stripe "cut out" that you see down the center front was made of a mesh material and a little too see-through for my taste.
2)The strap design in the back is cute, but if you were in the sun, you might end up with a funky tan line. Also the larger busted person, would have to wear a sportsbra underneath and we weren't sure how this design would go with that (seeing extra straps underneath the racer back)

Now here's where you tell us what you think? Would you buy this item if you saw it in a store? Why or why not??

Monday's Event of the Week

Hey Girls,

Check this race out! Our Herve Ledger dresses and Hermes silk scarves are starting to wonder why we're reaching for our running shirts and tights more than we are for them.

After repeated trips to our local running shops trying to find that classic yet sophisticated running outfit we've started to realize it just doesn't exist. What’s a girl to do??

Solution: We've decided to launch a women’s luxury running apparel line created specifically for the fashionable runner. And we need your help! We've created this blog to generate some ideas and to figure out what you, the consumer, want. What is your favorite running apparel? What piece of running clothing can’t you live without?
